I had no idea the family members with cameras were professional caliber photographers until my wife discovered the photos in the pages of my hometown paper, The Highlander. Here’s what happened. A few months ago a Burnet County fan called about booking for her husband’s surprise birthday party.  Usually for private parties we play music as folks are socializing and mingling so that’s what I expected from her, but she said emphatically that she didn’t want me to start until after the guests were served dinner, barbecue from nearby

California Trip - 7/22-7/27

jAm and the Weygandts

The journey into Southern California began uneventfully from Austin Bergstrom into LAX, and that's a good thing, but nothing else about the tour could be described as such. As soon as we left the airport in our rental car we drove into Hollywood for a rehearsal with John O'Kennedy, a friend of McCoy-Jacobs family and a successful composer for television and film, accompanied me Saturday and Sunday. We then drove to Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley where we had lunch with the promoter of Sunday's event, Maritza Baca and the

"Before I Could Even Learn Her Name"

I am in Nashville, having a wonderful time driving around this verdant city. I lucked out on the weather this week, as last week there was a heat wave; but a couple of nights ago I needed a long sleeve shirt! It is always interesting to return to a place you know. Nashville is growing, sparkling. Truth be told, I haven't been in the neighborhoods with flood damage, but I must say, places that were blighted or

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

May 05, 2010

Have you ever noticed that so many holidays that are celebrated in America wind up heavily embracing either booze or shopping? St. Patrick's Day was about more than tying one on. And President's Day, now isn't that about White Sales? I like to swill and bask in fine linens as much as the next one, but really, isn't there more to these days to think about? Today is Cinco de Mayo, which has become another excuse for inebriation, but has a quite serious reason for being. Cinco de Mayo acknowledges the victory of 4,000
